I'm looking into getting a dog, but my landlord will only allow me to do so if it's a quiet dog and either rarely barks or barks really softly. Because of space constraints, the dog probably has to be under 40 lbs, and not super energetic/hyper. I don't like curly/shaggy/wire-haired dogs, much prefer short to medium straight haired dogs, and I can't stand chihuahuas. What are my options here? I'm thinking I don't have much choice but to go with a dog that's at least part pug or basenji, I don't know what else works with what I'm looking for.

And any dog mixed with golden WILL SHED. They are NOT nonshedding dogs. I've had so many complaints from the people that own them saying that the breeder said they would be nonshedding. NOT TRUE AT ALL!!! They mat up extremely easily, and many end up having to be kept extremely short. I used to groom a miniature doodle that was a doll....kept short and still came in for a grooming every 4-6 weeks. And because they have such difficult coats, the grooming cost can be expensive. We charged $45 on the mini, and reg. doodles STARTED at $65.
Also, I've never seen a doodle with straight hair. It's mixed with poodle, that has curly hair, so you can't guarantee it will be straight.
Your best bet is to take a walk through your local animal shelter or humane society. There are so many mixes out there. My ex husband and I had a small mix that had short hair and was about 40 lbs. Most well behaved dog EVER and just a sweetheart. He has her now, but I still groom her, and she was a shelter dog.
You can save a life and probably find the perfect dog for your lifestyle!

They come in straight and curly hair. Her dog is a little lap-burrower, and I've only ever heard her bark in response to squeaky toys. However, they're rather expensive- $400 and up for puppies. You can always go to a shelter and look for small dogs with quiet temperments!

I recommend a Spaniel or Terrior. Terriors yap sometimes but Spaniels are usually quiet with smooth, medium hair.

then to guarantee your dog isn't a crazy barker, consider attending a few training sessions at petsmart or petco to learn how to reinforce your dog's approved barks (when someone comes to the door or peeps around the windows) and discourage the unapproved barks (when the wind blows, when sun shines, at any old thing that moves).

My Basenji mix could shatter glass with her screams and she does it just because, its worse when she's upset. They can also be very destructive and very energetic. Pugs shed A LOT and all the time. Get a Yorkie and keep its hair cut in a puppy cut. Beagles are good dogs too.

In my experience though, the small dogs are really yappy. (Shih Tzus, Pomeranians, Chihuahuas)

Our little female is under 15 pounds - she tries to watch her figure =} Neither one bark very much ... we weren't sure our male Pug was ever going to bark. He didn't bark until sometime after we got him a playmate ... and it was a real soft bark. He has since developed his lungs and you know it when he barks. It's still not very loud though.
Please reconsider mixing a Pug with another breed ... the second website link explains why.
They love to play play play - and are natural born comedians. They live for your attention and you better give it to them!! =} They were bred to be lap dogs and are true to their nature. There are so many reasons I could name why we love our Pugs so much ... but you need to do your research on the toy groups and decide which one is best for you.
Pugs are wonderful little dogs and are great with children - they are absolutely the happiest with a houseful of people. They know no strangers ... they love to go on walks ... they love to go anywhere, everywhere, anytime ... they like to ride in cars ... they can be trained to use puppy pads and are great for apartment living. They socialize well with other animals and can play well with cats (not sure the cats like it, but the Pugs sure do) ... they're very food motivated and can be trained easily with treats and praising.
They can be stubborn ... so you need to be in charge from the very beginning. They're so little and adorable when you bring them home, you just want to carry them everywhere. If you start that ... be prepared to continue that behavior. They absolutely love to be around you - in your lap or around your feet. Keep a watchful eye because you're gonna end up stepping on them a few times ... they're quick - and they're so smart!
We absolutely love our Pugs and couldn't start the day without them!!!
