I have wavy, thick hair and to help keep my hair straight when I use the flat iron I use a shampoo especially formulated to smooth your hair like the John Frieda products. It is also a good idea to use some sort of spray or serum before you iron to help keep moisture from affecting your hair which is why it gets wavy again.

Not to mention that if you are going to use the iron you should use a product on your hair that also protects from heat damage.

Try to also dry your hair as smooth as possible before you iron, perhaps even the night before if you can (which is what I do sometimes), I like to use a round ceramic brush which helps capture heat and smooth frizz.

When blow drying and ironing try to separate your hair into sections so you can dry it all completely and get each section smooth. It is easier that way and your are more likely to achieve that smooth look that will last a while.
